King Ashoka Family Tree [ Mauryan Dynasty 232-398 BCE ]

King Ashoka family tree: King Ashoka was the third ruler of the Mauryan Dynasty after its establishment by Chandragupta Maurya. King Ashoka is best known for the Kalinga War. In this war lakhs of people died. This incident made Ashoka so depressed that made him to left the violence of war and acceptance of Buddhism.

King Ashoka Family Tree starts from Nanda dynasty. The last ruler of the Nanda Dynasty was Dhananada. Chandragupta Maurya was a soldier in the Nanda Dynasty. Dhananada was killed by Chandragupta Maurya with the help of Chanakya Pandit (Also named as Kautilya). After the killing of Dhanananda, Mauryan Dynasty was established by Chandragupta Maurya.

2. Chandragupta Maurya History


Chandragupta Maurya: 322 BC-298 BC

  1. Chandragupta dethroned the last Nanda ruler and occupied Patliputra in 322 BC with the help of Kautilya Pandit.

  2. In King Ashoka Family Tree, Chandragupta Maurya defeated Seleucus Nicator and married his daughter Helena.

  3. Megasthenese was a Greek ambassador sent to the court of Chandragupta Maurya by Seleucus Nikator.

  4. Chandragupta Maurya accepted Jain religion and went to Chandragiri Hill, Sravanbelgola (Karnataka) with Bhadrabahu, where he died by slow starvation (Kara­MeshaiSalekhar).

  5. Under Chandragupta Maurya rule, (In the Family tree of Ashoka) for the first time, the whole of Northern India was united.

  6. In Chandragupta Mauryan Era, Trade flourished, agriculture was regulated, weights and measures were standardized and money came into use.

  7. Taxation, sanitation and famine relief became the concerns of the state.

3. Bindusra Maurya History


Bindusara: 298 BC-273 BC

  1. Chandragupta Maurya was succeeded by his son Bindusara.

  2. Bindusara, known to the Greeks as Anthrtx-hates (derived from the Sanskrit word Amitraghata i.e. slayers of foes), is said to have carried his arms to the Deccan (upto Mysore).

  3. Bindusara asked Antiochus I of Stria to send some sweet wine, dried fig, and a sophist. Antiochus I sent wine and figs but politely replied that OS philosophers are not for sale.


Bindusara's wife name Subhadrangi. She was the queen of the Mauryan Dynasty and mother of King Ashoka.

Q1. Who Was King Ashoka?
Ans. Ashoka was the son of Bindusara and grandson of Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the Great Mauryan Dynasty in Ancient India. When he was born her mother said Happy to have a child,"Now I am Ashoka" "without sorrow" and so the child was named. Mauryan dynasty was spread upto current {Afghanistan and Pakistan}. It was the largest Dynasty of Ancient times.

  • Ashoka fought the Kalinga war in 261 BC in 9th years of his coronation. The king was moved by the massacre in this war and therefore abandoned the policy of physical occupation in favour of policy of cultural conquest.

  • Ashoka was not an extreme pacifist. He did not pursue the policy of peace for sake of peace under all conditions. Thus, he retained Kalinga after his conquest and incorporated it into his empire.

  • After the Kalinga War King Ashoka Accepted Buddism.

  • He started to make many edicts stating the thoughts of "Ahinsa" (Non-Violence).

  • Ashoka sent missionaries to the kingdoms of the Cholas and the Pandyas, and five states ruled by Greek kings (Antiochus II, Syria; Philadelphos Ptolemy II, Egypt; Antigonus, Mecedonia; Maggus, Syrina; Alexander, Epirus). We also know that he sent missionaries to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Suvambhumi (Buma) and also parts of South-East Asia.

  • He also established Ashoka's Dhamma.

7. Conclusion


Mauryan Era is considered as a golden period of Ancient India in terms of winning of Battles and aquiring lands."King Ashoka family Tree" is full of worriers and wise rulers. But it did not last long. The Mauryan dynasty lasted only for 137 years.

Ashoka's death was followed by the division of the Mauryan Empire into two Parts-Western and Eastern. King Ashoka ruled for 36 years and died in 232 A.D.

    King Ashoka had about 5 children. Out of Them "Mahendra" and "Sagmitta" are more popular for their works.

    1. Mahendra - He was the son of King Ashoka and Queen Devi. Mahendra played a major role in promoting Buddhism. in the sounth India including Sri lanks.
    2. Sanghamitta - Sanghamitta was the daughter of King Ashoka and Queen Devi. Sanghamitta and her brother, the Venerable Mahinda went to Sri Lanka to spread the teachings of Buddha at the request of King Devanampiya Tissa who was a contemporary of Emperor Ashoka of India.
    3. Tivala - He was the son of Ashoka and Queen Karuvaki. There was no contributions to Buddhism made by him. He was actually the successor after Ashoka but Tivala may have predeceased Ashoka and thus could not succeed him as Emperor.
    4. Charumati - She is credited to have founded the monastery of Chabahil (called Charumati Vihara), which is one of the oldest Buddhist monastery of Nepal.
    5. Kunala - He was the son of King Ashoka and Padmavati. Neither he did any contributions to Buddhism nor he has done anything to remember.
