Alfred the Great Family tree: Alfred The Great was a glorious king of Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. He was born between (847–8490 in Wantage, Berkshire. Alfred was the 5th child of his parents. He is remembered as the most glorious king of Saxon who defended his kingdom successfully from Vikings, who wanted to conquest. Alfred also improved the military and Legal system of the kingdom during his tenure.

It looked quite impossible for him to be the king when his three brothers were alive.  Alfred's father Aethelwulf decided to make all his sons king, but periodically. In this way, Alfred also got the chance to become the king.

2. Grandparent of Alfred the Great


Alfred The Great Family tree is traceable up to many generations. Ealhmund Under was the great grandfather of Alfred. Alfred's Great Grandmother was Eaba was the daughter of Eoppa. After Ealhmund, Alfred's Grandfather Egbert became the king of Wessex. By marring to lady redburh, Egbert made her the Grandmother of Alfred The Great.
After Egbert, Ethelwulf became the King of Wessex.

3. Ethelwulf of Wessex [Father of Alfred]


Ethelwulf was born to king Egbert and Redburh(Mother). Ethelwulf did two marriages in his lifetime. First, he married to Osburh and then, Judith. Osburh was the daughter of Oslac. Ethelwuf had a total of Six Children. Alfred the Great has 5 brothers and one sister.

All these 6 children of Ethelwulf was from the same mother Osurh. His Daughter Aethelswith married to Burgred, King of Mercia, in 853. Aethelswith was the only Sister of  Alfred the Great.

4. Osburh [Mother]


Osburh was the wife of Ethelwulf and mother of Alfred the Great. Documents indicate that Osburh was a religious woman and very noble in her character. Osburh was known for her writing of Saxons songs. Once she offered to give the book full of Saxons songs to whoever could first memorize it, a challenge which Alfred took up and won.

Osburh's children became king and Queen of different Kingdoms. Osburh's father Oslac was descendant of King Cerdic's Jutish nephews, Stuf and Wihtgar.

5. Wife of Alfred


Alfred the Great married to Easlhswith. Easlhswith was the daughter of Aethelred Mucel and Eadburh(Mother). Easlhswith was from Merican  Royal family. Easlhswith's mother Eadburh was the descendant of Coenwulf of Mercia.

Easlhswith was married to Alfred in 868 at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. When she was married to Alfred. Alfred the great was not king. His elder brother Aethelred was ruling the kingdom of Saxons.

Alfred's wife was not given the title of Queen because her mother Eadburh had given poison to her husband by mistake. Ealhswith also had a brother called Aethelwulf.

6. Children of Alfred


The king of Wessex died in 858 and as per his wish, Wessex was ruled by all his three sons periodically —Aethelbald, Aethelberht, and Aethelred in a row. After four years of his marriage, Alfred became the king in 871.

Alfred the Great and Easlhswith became parents of 5 children.

  • Æthelflæd (d. 918), Lady of the Mercians, married Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians

  • Æthelgifu, made abbess of her foundation at Shaftesbury by her father

  • Æthelweard (d. c. 920)

  • Edward the Elder (d. 924), King of the Anglo-Saxons (Successor of Alfred the Great)

  • Ælfthryth, Countess of Flanders (d. 929), married Baldwin II, Count of Flanders


7. Conclusion


There are more traceable descendants from the maternal side in Alfred the great Family Tree. After the death of Alfred the Great in 899, his son Edward Became the king of Wessex. Edward married to Elfred and born a son named Edmund (Grandson of Alfred The Great) and this way family tree of Alfred the noble Continues.

Alfred the Great is also remembered for his courage. In the age of 21, he showed his bravery in the Battle of Ashdown (871).  Alfred led the army of his brother, King Aethelred of Wessex, in the battle against the invading Danes and emerged victoriously.
